Llangrannog a sandy cove: Cardigan Bay

Llangrannog is a small seaside village clustered around a sandy beach on Cardigan Bay.  The village stretches inland along the valley of Nant Hawen (Hawen Stream) to St Crannogs Church and the main park & ride car park.
Llangrannog is a small village with a big story, great walking and a wonderful dog friendly beach.

History
To the north of Llangrannog is the rounded hill of Pen Dinas Llochtyn which was occupied in the Iron Age around 500BC.  Pen Dinas Lloctyn was a well-defended fort and an important settlement.  As evidenced by the name dinas (city) rather than caer (fort).
Llangrannog’s origins are from St Carantog.  Around about 550AD he established a religious settlement not far from the seashore where the current St. Crannog’s church stands today.  The small "church village” was not visible from the sea, so as to avoid attention from seaborne raiders.  The original buildings are long gone and today’s church was built in 1884-5.
The early village owed its existence to the sea and coastal trade.  Ships were built here during the 18th century but not on the same scale as in nearby Cardigan and New Quay.
The coming of the railways in the latter part of the 18th century signalled the end of maritime trade and ship building.

Today
Llangrannog relies almost entirely on tourism its scenic location, sandy beaches, excellent cliff walks make and village atmosphere make an excellent holiday destination.

The iconic tooth like rock on the north edge of the beach is called Carreg Bica and according to legend is the tooth of the giant Bica who spat it out to rid himself of tooth ache. 

At low tide beyond Carreg Bica you can walk around the headland to another beach Cilborth Beach.  There are steps up the cliff behind the beach up to the coastal path to avoid people being stranded by incoming tides.

The coastal path provides wonderfull views and there are a number of circular walks,

To the north is the Ynys Loctyn peninsular, below Pen Dinas Lochtyn.  The end of the peninsular becomes an island at high tide.

Also to the north is The Urdd Centre one of 3 Welsh Youth Activity centres in Wales. 

Things to do and see:-
• Building sand castles
• Cliff top walks, enjoy coastal views and  views down to Llangrannog
• Walk up to St Crannogs statue on top of the cliff to the south of the beach. 
• St Crannogs Church 
• Have an Ice cream or cake and coffee at the Patio Café
• Fish & Chips at the Beach Hut café/restaurant
• A drink and or food  at The Ship Inn or Pentre Arms
